This longstanding Thai restaurant (which has an additional location in West Covina), is a charming spot that stands out among the rest of the SGV Thai restaurants due to its unique dishes. The crunchy catfish salad comes out in a dome-like puff and is paired with a spicy sour apple slaw, while the lime-punched century eggs with Chinese sausage salad should not be skipped. For a taste of Bangkok street food, complete with plastic stools, visit this temporary stand that exists outside of Silom Supermarket at night.

Snag a spot on the back patio and start off with a Thai iced tea and the tornado starter. This Los Angeles staple has been dishing up great food in the heart of Thai Town for over 20 years. At the entrance, you can use the massive whiteboard-sized menu (complete with pictures) to contemplate what your meal has in store or gaze longingly at the dishes you didn't include in your take-out order. The flavors are fresh, the spice levels range, and there are also plenty of vegetarian options for plant-based diners. Four-decade-old Anajak Thai is more than just a family affair; during the pandemic, it became a staple dining destination for fans in the Valley and all across Los Angeles with accolades to boot. Second-generation owner Justin Pichetrungsi has creatively played with ingredients and dishes in a series of fun events, from Thai Taco Tuesdays to his omakase dinners.

In addition to being our top pick for the best Thai restaurants in all of LA, Anajak is also one of the best restaurants when it comes to any kind of cuisine. The family-owned and operated restaurant serves up Northern Thai fare and has been a verifiable neighborhood staple since it opened, earning its spot in the top five of our ranking. When he founded Night + Market, Chef Kris Yenbamroong sought to serve up meals to bring people together in a fun way.

While Chinese takeout reigned supreme for many decades, Thai takeout seems to be the more popular indulgence as of late. However, whether you're looking to order in or go out, Los Angeles is home to an authentic Thai cuisine scene that is well worth exploring. From Thai town to more modern Thai eateries on Sunset Boulevard, finding some solid pad Thai or Panang curry isn't too difficult.

The tornado starter lets patrons enjoy a taste of everything and includes crispy shrimp, calamari, wontons, and crab rangoons. When it comes to entrées, you can't go wrong with any of the noodles or curries, but the panang chicken burrito is a unique favorite that is both comforting and hearty. The pra ram with peanut sauce, spinach, and your choice of protein is a lighter option that pairs wonderfully with tofu. Recessed ceiling lights illuminate the pivot front door that’s fixed against the concrete walls accented with horizontal lines. A flagstone walkway with a matching landing leads to the dark wood front door that opens in an unconventional way. It is complemented by tropical plants that add a nice touch to the house. New wall installation costs an average of $1,900, though expect to add $600 for siding and painting.

However, hiring a local door installer is the best way to go, as the pros can get the job done quicker and make sure the door fits and secures properly. If you want to save on labor costs, opt for a pre-hung door, which can reduce the price of installation by 30% to 50%. You may need to work with a structural engineer, which will cost about $500 total, in order to cut through supporting walls and install new headers.

The dark brown front door and landscaping (especially over the doorway!) enhance the dreamy locale. Take immersing yourself in nature to the next level with a forest green home exterior color. To avoid blending the home into its environment too much, paint the top half forest green and the lower half white, as Marshall Watson Interiors did on this Michigan home. A bright white base with seafoam blue accents is a tried-and-true color combination.

This can be a simpler process but older homes may require a custom size.Hardware (door knobs, handles and door locks) is sold separately. Pre-hung doors are known for their smooth, easy installation and precise fit. The existing door and framing must be removed before a pre-hung unit can be installed.

Fiberglass-composite doors are tough and maintenance-free, and are a smart choice for harsh or humid climates. They mimic the look of wood with wood-grain texturing and can be stained to match oak, cherry, walnut, and a variety of other woods. Beneath their molded surface is a framework of wooden stiles and rails, including wood edges for the lockset. Voids in the framework are filled with polyurethane-foam insulation. But if you’re simply lifting the old door off its hinges and hanging a new one, remember that steel doors come with hinges attached or holes for the hinges predrilled.

Front Doors: Modern Styles of Your Home

house front doors

On the flip side, it’s hard to not like natural wood doors which can look great on any home. This is an opportunity to make your front door POP or blend in. I tend to like bright colored doors that stand out, especially homes with neutral exteriors. Popular brightly colored doors include red, yellow and blue. A double front door in sunshine yellow stands out against the blue walls of this house. It creates a very welcoming ambiance that makes people enter with a happy heart.

Materials

Below, view some of our favorite exterior paint colors for inspiration. The contrasting colors of the flowers around the walkway and doorway are absolutely gorgeous. This color red pops when it’s next to the grayish color of the siding. The sweeping curve of this entryway that surrounds a rectangular door is echoed in the curve of the steps leading to the door. The dramatic – but still muted – entrance is further enhanced by the sconces and planters flanking the door. Steel is extremely durable, easy to maintain, and it’s a great insulator.

White With Black Accents

The one we chose was just what we had always been searching for. Buying an exterior door like this online seemed intimidating, but Grand Entry made it a breeze. The rail and stile construction ensures exceptional stability, and the smooth, solid wood veneer gives your front door a uniform look that enhances its overall aesthetic.

Bright Yellow, Blue, and White

Expect to spend about $550 to $640 in labor costs for each exterior door. The more exterior entrances you have, the higher the total cost. Pre-hung doors include the frame, but you can also purchase most door frames separately for around $115 to $400 each, or about $7 to $20 per linear foot. Security steel frames or specialty frames may cost $850 to $1,500. Door materials range from around $50 to $6,000 or more, depending on the type of door. Some of the most popular materials include wood, steel, fiberglass, iron, vinyl, or composite, ranging from $150 to $6,000 or more.

Red and blue can look elegant if you select deep, rich shades rather than vibrant ones. Take inspiration from the New York City building where designer Eliza Crater Harris resides. The ruby red brick exterior features a navy blue painted door, white windows, and a brownstone entry frame. The traditional combination can easily be replicated with red, navy blue, white, and brown paints. An enchanting house that perfectly blends in with its surroundings featuring a hobbit-like front door that’s fitted with wrought iron hardware.

Do you want any added protection?

It's best to hire a structural engineer for $100 to $150 per hour to make sure this work is done safely and will hold up over time. Iron doors are a striking combination of beauty and durability. Many are designed to let in more light than average doors while still providing high security. Police say that an unidentified man smashed one of the home's glass doors to gain entry a little before 7 a.m. Before they were taken into custody without further incident. It works nicely with the walnut, oak, soapstone, and marble materials used outside and inside the house. Aluminum doors are also commonly used for front doors, although they are a more popular material for rear-entry doors, storm doors, or sliding, patio doors. It’s extremely durable, well-insulated and can have a finish mimicking wood-grain. They’re also fairly inexpensive and require very little maintenance.

Premium versions get a vinyl coating similar to the one on vinyl-clad windows for greater weather resistance. Some even have a stainable wood-fiber coating or, on really high-end versions, a laminated-wood veneer. All steel doors have an inner frame made of wood or, for greater strength, steel. The cavities within the frame are filled with high-density foam insulation. Premium doors typically have a 24-gauge skin and a steel frame, though some offer heavier-gauge steel (represented by a lower number).

Together with the neutral and wooden walls, they made an interesting exterior. Your front door is an opportunity to show your personal style and add beauty, and value to your home. We're much more than just a source for high-quality doors for your home.

Screen doors are hinged doors that go in front of your front entry door. Some screen doors come with an interchangeable mesh or glass interior that allows you to keep your front door open to enjoy views or bring in more air without the bugs. The material of your front door is a key component of choosing the right exterior door for security, durability, and insulation. Insulation is responsible for regulating the temperature inside your home year-round, and some materials are better with this than others. They are horizontally divided doors that allow the top half to open while the bottom half remains closed. The split style allows in more light and fresh air than a standard door.

A small herd was brought to the island for a film shoot in the 1920s, then marooned there (Hollywood wasn’t embracing the whole “treat animals ethically” approach back then). But the buffalo herd flourished, growing to about 150, with free-range over the island. Local conservationists do manage the population, though, via bison birth control.

You may have heard that the bears were coming into neighborhoods because of the drought in the region and figured their newsworthy visits would stop now that the drought is over. Local wildlife experts say decades of learned behavior mean the bears won’t break their habits of commuting for an easy meal and pool party. So we can still look forward to news footage of bears getting darted and goofily falling from trees.

Families may opt to purchase a Single Day Pass which allows you to discover and explore the grounds at your own pace. Families will have the chance to interact with the animals from outside of the enclosures. Or, you can opt to get even closer to some of the animals for an additional fee. “Pick your favorite animal enclosure and experience a unique and positive connection with our animals from inside the enclosure.” Families may choose from the Tortoise Landing, the Bird room, the Reptile Room, and more.

The Cast of ‘Animal House,’ Then and Now

Being at The Gentle Barn is like walking through a giant storybook where you’ll hear the animals’ stories of resilience and learn what they teach us about forgiveness, unconditional love, and living in the moment. You are sure to fall in love with animals more deeply than ever before. Oasis Camel Dairy provides an opportunity to get up-close and personal with animals we don’t see a lot of in Southern California — camels. Tours give families the chance to feed the camels and mini sheep on-site. Plus, you’ll see colorful parrots, cockatoos, and giant goldfish. At Canzelle Alpacas, families will see much more than alpacas.

Our best overall pick, the Petsfit Wooden Dog House, features three colors and a smart, functional, weather-resistant design in three sizes. It’s unlikely they’ll raise their armies from the sewers and lay waste to our civilization, but their street smarts mean they’ll be stealing cat food and crashing office pizza parties for the foreseeable future. Raccoons have been documented using water displacement to access treats and can learn and remember how to bypass door locks. The predators are also at high risk of ingesting rat poison that humans introduce to their food chain, which has sickened and killed several mountain lions in just the past few years.

The film's significant cultural impact can be seen across many college campuses in the United States. At Harding University, a private Christian university affiliated with the Churches of Christ, Titans Men's Social Club refuses to put on a spring formal for its members. Instead, the men of Titans choose to celebrate an event called "TOGA" which is heavily inspired by the iconic toga concert from the movie. In the 1980s, it was difficult for Titans to throw a Valentine's Day function because the vast majority of members were busy attending Valentine's Day functions put on by the Women's Social Clubs on campus.

Many of the magazine's writers were recent college graduates, hence its appeal to students all over the country. Doug Kenney was a Lampoon writer and the magazine's first editor-in-chief. They made their debut in 1973's National Lampoon's High School Yearbook, a satire of a Middle America 1964 high school yearbook. Kroger's and Pepperidge's characters in the yearbook were effectively the same as their characters in the movie, whereas Vernon Wormer was a P.E.

After DeAngelo lost his job in Auburn, the East Area rapes in Central California stopped, and a series of rape-related murders in Southern California began. After being fired as an Auburn police officer for shoplifting at a hardware store, an angry DeAngelo told him he wanted to kill his former police chief, Huddle said. DeAngelo married Sharon Huddle in 1973 while working as a police officer in tiny Exeter, Calif., shortly before a series of bedroom ransackings began in neighboring Visalia.

But the arrangement also means there will be no grand reveal beyond what prosecutors include in their opening remarks. Evidence against DeAngelo remains sealed, leaving victims with only the declaration that a family DNA match linked DeAngelo to crimes that terrorized entire towns. The spacious setting was picked because it allows the physical distancing required to guard against the spread of COVID-19. Masks will be required, but those worn by DeAngelo and his lawyers will be clear so the audience can see his face, projected onto two screens on the wall. Now, nearly 50 years later, he stands accused of an extended spasm of violence -- home invasions, rapes, murders -- in the 1970s and ‘80s.

We also had a ~3 month rotation program where designers and engineers were taken from their respective products and would work on the Design Platform team to push the system forward. They would contribute heavily while they were on our team, and then return to their original product teams being staunch advocates for the system. The goal of a design system is to scale yourself (and your design team) to build product faster and empower everyone to make better design decisions. At Asana, we’re at the start of our journey to build a holistic design system. I’ve found that reflecting on these lessons has helped us set the team, and the company, up for success so that we deliver the true value of a design system.

Bring people on the journey before helping for the moment

We’re excited to share that we achieved everything we strove for, but more importantly, we’re inspired to share everything we’ve discovered along the way. We uncovered a few larger systemic issues, and there were lots of challenges and hurdles we had to overcome. It has been an immense cross-collaborative effort across brand, design, content design, and engineering, and this would not have been possible without our perseverance to play, as a team (one of our core Atlassian values).

Once they’ve done the initial research, the team converges to discuss specs and requirements. Program managers then work with other product teams to align on the design system changes, roll out the changes, and monitor feedback. Scale your design system with UXPin Merge, unique technology that makes it easy to use a coded design system for prototyping.

When you consider the nature of Atlassian’s products, the stakes are almost too high to not have a design system in place. Now in its third version with strong adoption and instrumentation in place, one of the next goals of ADG is to make back-end services more consistent. The first iteration of ADG was released in June 2012 to govern its products.

The Style Guide is like a rule book for your website’s visual identity, it defines the design elements that create a unique, consistent identity with its core principles. Imagine a website where different pages have different font sizes and font styles. The color combinations don’t complement each other (or worse, conflict with each other) and aren’t consistent with the company’s brand. These and many others are reasons enough to prevent users from spending time on your website.

And as mentioned above, we include developers and product owners in the design process. As the full team works together using the Atlassian Design Guidelines, developers and product owners become better designers. That skill set then becomes shared across the team, which is a fundamental value in agile culture.

It’s traditionally been thought of as a cottage industry – a bunch of specialized folks crafting beautiful one-off solutions. Special thanks to Jocelyn Wong for designing the cover illustration. We hope you’re inspired and are just as excited about our team and the future of Atlassian Design System.

Improving the design and content of atlassian.design is just the tip of the iceberg. Beyond the surface of the redesign, our engineers have also rearchitected the foundation of what our site is built upon. We improved our infrastructure with Gatsby, integrating with Contentful. The new site is faster, more reliable, and aligns with Atlassian platform standards.

The decision paid off since it resulted in design systems champions embedded across the company. A lot of the time, we’re investigating what products are already doing and testing any system improvements in product screens that have already been designed by product designers. This means we spend a lot of time in Figma evaluating screens for Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Trello, etc.

We prepared an empty Atlassian product screen as a canvas for each designer to work in. To help the team carry out our goals, we established a playful, curious, and authentic environment. We solve the common problems for all, small and large, to provide a solid foundation that consumers can confidently build upon.

Be sure to measure your dog to ensure you’ll get the right size doghouse. Many websites include diagrams on how to use your pet’s measurements to select the proper size. Opt for stainless steel hardware that will hold up longer in outdoor weather. Make sure your roof is slanted, not flat, so that snow and rain will slide off. And opt for those with asphalt or other roofing material since the roof is the first place to leak and often the reason you need a replacement. Check the thickness of the wood and the level of insulation, if any, before you buy.

Science Projects

With just a few tools, it's possible to make a DIY dog house. Dog houses are fairly simple and budget-friendly projects and can be usually be completed by someone with just basic building skills. They'll take anywhere from half a day to a few days to complete and can easily be done for under $100. “If it hops, wiggles, or crawls” you’re likely to see it at The Reptile Zoo.

Many animals design their homes to trap heat in and keep the cold out, especially when there are babies living in the home, since baby animals cannot keep themselves warm like their parents can. Nests, dens, and burrows are examples of this type of home. This tour follows the same format and description of the Family Tour but is intended for a larger group of adults only from mixed households as part of an organized group activity. The cast of comedy classic 'Animal House' have pursued careers in acting, directing and producing since the film's release 40 years ago. The talents of director John Landis and Saturday Night Live's irrepressible John Belushi conspired to create a rambunctious, subversive college comedy that continues to resonate.

We can’t think of many places you could see wild bears, parrots, mountain lions, whales and buffalo (yup!) all in the same day, but this is Southern California — and you totally could. Our region’s bountiful mix of deserts, forests, mountains and ocean draws tens of thousands of visitors each year to take in all that natural splendor, including our iconic wildlife. Wait a few days or weeks and watch to see if any birds use your nest as their home. Here are some of the most common ones and the animals that use them.

Unconcerned, the Deltas organize a toga party, recruiting Pinto and Flounder to shoplift party supplies from a supermarket. At the market, Pinto meets a young cashier named Clorette and invites her to the party, while Otter flirts with an older woman, who turns out to be Wormer's alcoholic wife, Marion. During the toga party, at which Otis Day and the Knights perform, Otter seduces Marion, while Pinto and Clorette make out until she passes out, drunk. Pinto resists the temptation to rape her and instead takes her home in a shopping cart.

But if you want to try it out in colder weather, Petsfit sells a separate Dog House Insulation Kit that fits snugly inside. The Petsfit dog house is also practical, with a slanted roof and translucent door flaps, so your dog can find refuge from rain. Plus, the roof of the Petsfit Wooden Dog House opens up like a trunk or chest, with pneumatic braces that make it easy to lift the top and clean inside. The floor—made of the same spruce slats as the exterior walls—is similarly easy to remove and clean.

‎‎Design Get started

atlassian design system

When a designer needs to whip up a new landing page, all the pre-designed UI symbol elements are ready to drop in and can be non-destructably edited. When a marketer needs to send out a newsletter, there is no question as to the kind of tone the copy should be written in or what the header image should be. It's all there, clearly laid out and because everyone has discussed, contributed to and agreed upon it there is no question as to what and how things need to be done.

Our principles

For instance, if you open up an icon library like react-icons, you will notice each collection has a unique and distinct feel. Below are the design systems which are often utilized by Open UI for research purposes. Over the course of 2013, and with Atlassian doubling in size nearly every year, I had basically onboarded about 500 people about the importance of our design system and how they can use it. I found this to be a really effective way of changing the company culture with regard to design. Without doing something that didn’t scale, we might have taken a lot longer to get started. When you’re working on your system, try not to get too obsessed with over-engineering a seamless, perfect workflow but instead look for scrappy ways to start, and just keep making progress if it’s working.

Everyone approaches and thinks of values and principles differently, so we started by gathering inspiration from other design systems. Then we crafted clear definitions of what values and principles mean to us, along with where they fit with our strategy, mission, and vision. Our building blocks work together to create products that feel familiar, cohesive, and part of a family. Our Figma libraries and tools include our foundational styles, design tokens, components, and other helpers. Usually, the safest approach is to analyze existing systems to see which ones are the closest to your brand and needs.

As I mentioned above, the Atlassian design team at the start of 2013 was relatively small (~13 people) compared to the engineering team (~300 people). One of the benefits of including written guidelines was that engineers could make a huge amount of progress without a designer there. It meant that we could stop designing screens in Sketch and instead, jump on a whiteboard and brainstorm a flow, or start to work on much bigger product problems that existed upstream. With the uptick in design systems discussions over the last couple of years, I’m occasionally asked for tips or insights from my experience building the design system at Atlassian.

In a nutshell, a design system is a collection of documents, articles, examples, code snippets, screenshots, design guidelines, components, philosophies and other digital assets for a product design company. Think of it as a big knowledge-base that is part UI kit, part documentation with instructions, language and coding guidelines all wrapped up together. Each component meets a specific interaction or UI need, and has been specifically created to work together to create patterns and intuitive user experiences.

We're on a mission to make it easy for teams to design, develop, and deliver high-quality Atlassian UI. A common misconception about design systems is that once they’re established, or, in this case, once their documentation is published or site is launched, they become an omnipotent and an unchangeable source of truth. Modern technologies like CSS make it easy to separate the look of an application from the logic in an application. Likewise, make sure to structure automated tests so they will be resilient when the visual design evolves.

For example, I’d go through some history of how we used to have 44 different dropdown menus (not an exaggeration), but we have one now and here is how you should use it. The very first version of the Atlassian Design System was about 20 static HTML files that I was hosting on a Mac Pro under my desk. There was no templating in these files, no version control, I had imported the CSS from our products, and I wrote the markup myself for each component. This version was nasty to update and wasn’t scalable, but enough people found value in it that it I was inspired to invest more time and effort that put us on the path to creating the Atlassian Design System. The team works in 2-week sprints to ship iterations within days or weeks to customers. Larger changes (like revamping a color scheme or set of UI patterns) require more time.

Table of contents

Atlassian Design System is a collection of UI components, foundations, and standards that help teams build beautiful product experiences. An online design system is a digital repository accessible via the Internet that contains design assets, guidelines, and tools to facilitate collaborative design and development processes. It is also a great case study reference for how to make your own UI/UX designs as inclusive as possible. Luckily, as James points out, embedding designers in product teams (and vice versa with developers in design teams) helps build consensus more quickly for changes to the design system. People from multiple teams contributed to the process – a dedicated team wasn’t formed at first so that the design system wouldn’t be created in isolation.

Set up your style environment

First, we’re excited to share with the community some of our favorite new features. Customer interviews provide rich information to incorporate into the design process. Atlassians are required to use the latest version of ESLint, and we strongly recommend it for anyone using design system packages. You can also find design systems from global companies like Microsoft’s Fluent, IBM’s Carbon, GitHub’s Primer, and over 50 others to explore in this GitHub repo.

Design will change, and it's important to ensure the code base can easily follow new trends. As the team engages in sprint planning and backlog grooming, involve the designers. Getting their input when making decisions about the product's future direction will make getting there easier. As you just saw, the product owner and the designer will spend time brainstorming and iterating on the product plan early on.

Atlassian Design System values and principles work in tandem with all of the others, not in place of them. They help our team align on what kind of design system we want to build at Atlassian, what needs we address, and how we address them. And they’re not just for our design system team — we hope to use them to enable contribution in the future.

It began with extensive audits across our content, design, tooling, and code. We applied the visual foundations of our design system and reused existing components to design and build the new site, truly putting our design system to the test. Starting from an existing Design System with a similar Component & Pattern Library might set you up with a great start.

We started by sharing the history of how the design system has evolved from Atlassian Design Guidelines in 2012 all the way to Atlassian Design System in 2020. We brought people on the journey ✨(our principle demonstrating Empowering, for everyone) by sharing context, brainstorming, discussing, and sparring ideas together as a team. With a strong internal focus on quality, our values and principles couldn’t have arrived at a better time. The Atlassian Design System is powered by a team of over 30 designers, engineers, and content designers. As we scale, it becomes harder and harder to coordinate the growing team to work towards the same vision. Our vision is to be the cornerstone of crafting quality user interfaces in Atlassian products.

Back in 2013 the designer to engineer ratio was something in the range of 1 designer to every 15–20 engineers. While I shudder at the thought of that number today, back then I tried to use that imbalance to my advantage. Something that helped me get the engineering org on my side at Atlassian was to create a talk for new starters during their first week of onboarding at the company. About 15 or so people would be there every week and I’d be able to get them to understand what we were trying to do from day 1.

We want to do this again, not only because it was fun but also because it’s a great way to get creative and empathize with designers using our design system. Where your team easily can discover, collect and share visual content relevant to different projects. After the rollout of the first version, a design system becomes a journey that never ends. Finally, make sure you implement your icon library and other styles.

Ship Fleet Overview

viking cruise ships

These 25 rooms, coming in at 150 square feet, are often called "aquarium class" because the windows are at the same level of the river outside. While you don't get the benefit of fresh air, people often choose these cabins for their lower price point and the fact that you often don't spend all that much time in your room on a typical river cruise. Throughout our decades of sailing the world’s great rivers, Viking has repeatedly reinvented the European river cruise vessel. By continuously building upon our tradition of innovation, we have set industry standard and delighted our guests.

Why Do Most Viking Longships in Europe Look Exactly Alike?

At additional cost are only spa massages, beauty salon services; specialty beer, premium alcohol (wine and spirits), and some shore excursions. All Viking OCEAN ships offer destination-rich itineraries marked by "small ship cruise" tour and onboard experiences. Compared to similar-class vessels operated by other companies, Viking OCEAN itineraries feature fewer sea days, longer port stays and many overnight ports of call. Having a fleet of identical ships is not unusual in river cruising, which is why it's more important to choose a line that fits your needs, rather a specific vessel, when you're planning your trip. First, river cruise ships are restricted in size by the locks and canals systems along Europe's waterways.

The Viking fleet

Due to the bad weather, the ship rolled quite significantly (though well within operational limits) and various fixtures and fittings were broken. As a safety precaution, just under half the passengers were evacuated before the ship managed to restart one engine and sail under its own power to the Port of Molde, Norway. However, the Viking Expedition ships are smaller at 30,150 GRT and carry only 378 passengers each. That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise — there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process, trust us — we always recommend that you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises. Viking fares do include port taxes and fees, which can add up to hundreds of dollars per sailing.

While Viking doesn't market itself as a luxury line, some would call it that. Viking vessels are full of luxury touches, with the pricing to match (see more on what Viking trips cost at the bottom of this story). If it's a floating celebration you're looking for in a vacation, this isn't the line for you. Since its founding in 1997, the upscale cruise brand has carved out a niche catering to a certain type of thoughtful, inquisitive, generally older traveler looking to explore the world and learn a thing or two along the way. In March 2024, were opened for booking two grand voyages ("Longitudinal World Cruise VI" and "Longitudinal World Cruise VII") traversing from Antarctica to the Americas, plus "Viking World Journeys 2026" (from Los Angeles to London-Greenwich).

You'll always be able to find staples such as prime rib, chicken and salmon. With their innovative patented design, al fresco Aquavit Terrace and understated elegance, Viking Longships provide the most rewarding way to explore Europe. Passengers onboard Viking Sea wear "resort casual" clothing, which in the evening means somewhat dressy, with men wearing slacks and button-down or polo-style shirts and women wearing dresses, skirts and blouses, or slacks and blouses. Viking Sea has no formal night, but some men do wear jackets to dinner, though it's certainly not required.

The line puts out loungers, some in the sun and some under cover, so you can enjoy drinks and river views. The sundeck also has an herb garden, a shuffleboard area and two putting greens (although these are very rarely used). Because itineraries and time in port are so important on Viking Sea, the ship doesn't have a casino or splashy water features. Programming and entertainment options match the target crowd, though the production shows offered onboard in the theater are a rare weak spot that could use some revamping.

Cabins and suites

For this subset of travelers, Viking offers a wide range of both ocean and river cruise itineraries that have a heavy focus on the destinations visited. Viking River Cruises deals include staterooms, onboard dining, most cultural activities, most shore excursions. Beer, soft drinks and wine by the glass are included with lunches and dinners.

The launderettes are stocked with detergent for the washing machines that, unlike on many cruise ships with launderettes, do not come with an extra cost. Other interior spaces that are part of the ocean ships include a stylish spa with a thermal suite area that is open to all passengers at no extra charge (something that is not common on cruise vessels) and a fitness center. Many of the activities on board Viking's ocean ships revolve around "cultural enrichment," to use a phrase often used by Viking executives. On any given day, you might find an expert on one of the destinations you're visiting lecturing in the theater, or a classical musician performing in the central atrium, known as The Living Room. The ships also offer some traditional entertainment, including production shows with singers and dancers.

What it is is a line that has focused very specifically on "thinking person's cruises" that offer a deeper dive into the destinations that its ships visit than is typical at many lines. The centerpiece of the top deck of each of Viking's ocean ships is the main pool area, which is home to a pool, hot tub and rows of lounge chairs, as well as comfortable seating areas. You'll also find musicians including pianists and guitar players performing at times in the Viking Living Room — a three-deck-high, atrium-like space at the center of the ship. Filled with comfortable seating areas and home to a bar, the Viking Living Room serves as a central meeting point for passengers throughout the day and night.

From redefining River Cruises, they swiftly moved on to redefine Ocean Cruising with their matching ships and child-free policies and now are moving into the smaller, but fast-growing market of expedition cruising. Viking Sun was renamed Zhao Shang Yi Dun and sails exclusively in the Chinese market via a joint partnership with China Merchants Shekou Cruises. Viking Cruises has an active fleet of eight ships currently with ten further ships on order (Viking Polaris, Viking Neptune and Viking Mars due in 2022, Viking Saturn due in 2023 and six further Ocean-class ships which are unnamed at present).

If you are unhappy with the service you receive, you can adjust this amount before disembarking at the Explorers' Desk. (You can also increase the tip amount if so desired.) Also, a 15% gratuity is added to bills at bars and for drinks at restaurants. Note that Viking river ships do not have fitness centers, which is relatively unusual for river ships. Viking has long argued that few of its customers use fitness centers and the space that would be devoted to one is better used for other things. However, if you're fitness-obsessed, Viking river ships may not be the best choice for your river trip.

The ship design features several spacious open-deck areas, including Promenade Deck and bow-located Observation Deck (forward on Lounge Deck). Most passenger staterooms (189 total) are with French balconies, excluding only Deck 6's Suites (OS-Owner, ES-Explorer). Cabin sizes vary between 21 m2 (Nordic Balcony / French Balcony) and 114 m2 (Owner Suite with 73 m2 Terrace Garden). Viking Cruises' ocean liners made the company world's largest "small ship cruise" brand with a dominant share on the luxury travel market (23,9 % by year 2020). In 2019, the parent company also created the brand "Viking Expeditions" with a newbuild fleet of two small-sized expedition vessels - Viking Octantis (2021) and Viking Polaris (2022), plus an option for 2 more same-designed units. Line's river cruises are targeted primarily to English-speaking travelers in the UK, North America and Australia.
